[OPEN] cameras suddenly ceased to exist

Post by Kristian »

Hi there,

this morning i wanted to attend a video call on my arcolinux, but both cameras, the integrated one and my usb-cam, ceased to exist. Both of em were working without any problems for over 2 weeks now
Baaad move.
Even a restart didn't change anything.

Ok, according to dmesg the do actually exist, but neither zoom nor teams nor vlc can find them.

Code: Select all

...
[ 2.258548] usb 1-2.1: new high-speed USB device number 4 using xhci_hcd
[ 2.365205] usb 1-2.1: New USB device found, idVendor=0c46, idProduct=6363, bcdDevice= 1.00
[ 2.365212] usb 1-2.1: New USB device strings: Mfr=2, Product=1, SerialNumber=3
[ 2.365215] usb 1-2.1: Product: USB 2.0 Camera
[ 2.365217] usb 1-2.1: Manufacturer: Sonix Technology Co., Ltd.
[ 2.365219] usb 1-2.1: SerialNumber: SN0001
...
[ 3.093269] usb 1-12: New USB device found, idVendor=5986, idProduct=0397, bcdDevice=14.78
[ 3.093275] usb 1-12: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[ 3.093278] usb 1-12: Product: Integrated Camera
[ 3.093280] usb 1-12: Manufacturer: Vimicro corp.
...
I'm not a pro in linux kernel stuff so i have no idea what could have happened. I didn't even update my system since my last use of the camera. I did join a zoom meeting without camera yesterday, but how could zoom rip off my cams form the linux system??

where shall i look at?

THX for help :-)
Kristian

I am not a pro either
at all

I would check the update that came in

"rip" in a terminal will tell me what hit my machine

is there a kernel update? Can I downgrade the kernel? See videos and articles

is another kernel helpful? -lts -zen -hardened See videos and articles

and never forget to read this

for other people to be able to help you

type "probe" in a terminal and give us the link

there are arch wiki pages just for specific hardware - dell - lenovo etc

thanks for help, i went through the stuff.

with rip im sure now, there was no update since the last time both cameras worked.

dmesg still lists both

Code: Select all

...
[ 2.320199] usb 1-2.1: New USB device found, idVendor=0c46, idProduct=6363, bcdDevice= 1.00
[ 2.320213] usb 1-2.1: New USB device strings: Mfr=2, Product=1, SerialNumber=3
[ 2.320219] usb 1-2.1: Product: USB 2.0 Camera
[ 2.320223] usb 1-2.1: Manufacturer: Sonix Technology Co., Ltd.
[ 2.320227] usb 1-2.1: SerialNumber: SN0001
...
[ 3.056868] usb 1-12: New USB device found, idVendor=5986, idProduct=0397, bcdDevice=14.78
[ 3.056873] usb 1-12: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[ 3.056875] usb 1-12: Product: Integrated Camera
[ 3.056877] usb 1-12: Manufacturer: Vimicro corp.
lsusb also lists both

Code: Select all

...
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 046d:c092 Logitech, Inc. G102/G203 LIGHTSYNC Gaming Mouse
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 1a2c:5068 China Resource Semico Co., Ltd IKE-4000 Wired Keyboard Black
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 1b3f:2008 Generalplus Technology Inc. Usb Audio Device
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0c46:6363 WaveRider Communications, Inc. USB 2.0 Camera
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 1a40:0801 Terminus Technology Inc. USB 2.0 Hub
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 5986:0397 Acer, Inc Integrated Camera
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
But there are no /dev/video* folders anymore, they just don't exist.

Code: Select all

v4l2-ctl --list-devices[/b]
Cannot open device /dev/video0, exiting.
according to my probe: https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=13f326fc7d something destroyed the drivers ... how could that have happened without an update?
