[SOLVED] Newbie Cant get Arco to run w Nvidia GT620

Post by mattro_indy »

I am newbie to Linux few months ago. Addicted and professional distro hopper.
Have settled on Arch. Would like to run Manjaro KDE and Arco plasma and two machiens.
I have an old i5 desktop with integrated graphics that i added a nvidia GT 620 that uses 390xx driver.
This machine has done fine on all flavors of Manjaro, Fedora, various Ubuntu based distros, etc. No Nvidia battles.

The Arco liveUSB will not boot when nvidia card is installed. If I remove vid card and plug into integrated graphics it's fine but I need the power of the graphics card. I make sure optimus and nvidia 390xx installed but the system hangs during boot before DM. Ctrl-Alt F2 lets me install and do things but cant get around it.
XL install with fewest options, latest kernal, SDDM, plasma. I have done all the work in erikdubois vids. I have been thru this forum and tried many things.
Closest I have came is fresh install, then switch to LightDM (so optimus works) then use to switch to nvidia. boots into DM, but no dirver 640x480 and now Optimus wont launch. (GPU setup failed at Xorg pre-start hook). inxi -b shows no nvidia driver installed although pamac shows they are.

Very frustrating cause Arco is smooth and beautiful and I love the way Erik conducts himself. It has Btrfs, Pamac, flatpak, snaps, many desktops, what more could we want...

The misery of the drivers

if only you lived in Belgium and I could get my hands on such laptops...

Seems you covered all basics.

These drivers sometimes work and sometimes they do not - depends on the maintenance of the AUR people

I would let it be for a while

and keep track of the changes on AUR and try again later

Did you see all videos of the playlist nvidia on Youtube?

Thanks for quick reply.
I dont live in Belgium but I have a Dutch lineage (from what I've been told). Last name 'Buis'

I hope to build a new AMD 5600G desktop soon and it will be an Arco machine.

Yes, I did try your yourtube playlist. Again , thanks and keep up the great work.

Manajaro and Endeavour work well on my system. Eneavour makes me work to hard, Manjaro great but I like variety.

Unfortunately I am stuck on the Plasma desktop which lessens my options.
At first I loved Mint and Gnome (PopOS), but then I got a feel for plasma and I cant use anything else.

The AUR and Pamac are couple of main reasons I love Arch, Plus I like rolling distro.

If I get my AMD 5600G build done, or a radeon GPU for existing workstation, Arco will go on it quickly.

Thanks for all your replies.
