[SOLVED]SDDM Shutdown issue

Post by dbarron »

Recently, I've noticed somewhat intermittent (but mostly present) issues with my shutdown of the pc. It seems to be sddm refusing to go away till killed hard. I've not noticed anything else in the system logs other than that. Note the 1.5 minute delay between user slice and sddm.

Code: Select all

Nov 13 18:08:58 arco-desktop systemd[1]: user-runtime-dir@1000.service: Deactivated successfully.
Nov 13 18:08:58 arco-desktop systemd[1]: Stopped User Runtime Directory /run/user/1000.
Nov 13 18:08:58 arco-desktop systemd[1]: Removed slice User Slice of UID 1000.
Nov 13 18:08:58 arco-desktop systemd[1]: user-1000.slice: Consumed 1h 37min 228ms CPU time.
Nov 13 18:10:27 arco-desktop systemd[1]: sddm.service: State 'stop-sigterm' timed out. Killing.
Nov 13 18:10:27 arco-desktop systemd[1]: sddm.service: Killing process 590 (sddm) with signal SIGKILL.
Nov 13 18:10:27 arco-desktop systemd[1]: sddm.service: Killing process 14027 (Xorg) with signal SIGKILL.
Nov 13 18:10:27 arco-desktop systemd[1]: sddm.service: Main process exited, code=killed, status=9/KILL
Nov 13 18:10:27 arco-desktop systemd[1]: sddm.service: Failed with result 'timeout'.
Nov 13 18:10:27 arco-desktop systemd[1]: Stopped Simple Desktop Display Manager.
Nov 13 18:10:27 arco-desktop systemd[1]: Stopping User Login Management...
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot or even fix it ?

Yes, Erik, I had googled and found nothing (doesn't mean nothing to find, of course).
I just reinstalled on baremetal (not worth it to setup vbox when I don't need it for one off)..and yes, it still hung on shutting down sddm.
Maybe the hack is to just set it's timer lower (like suggested to 10 seconds). It's a relatively new issue (for me) of the last couple weeks, and I had finally got around to switching journal to log to hd vs volatile file system (/tmp). Since I have the new baremetal install now, I may tinker more there with sddm-git and other ideas to see if it fixes it w/o worrying about blowing up my main daily usage install.

Sddm-git seems to have cured the issue on both installations. I can only surmise it may be something shown up by recent kernel changes, since SDDM itself hasn't been updated for about a year.
