[INFO] i3 config tips

Post by rockatudie » Fri Mar 02, 2018 3:51 pm

Maybe this is just me. But I like to play around and I switch between things alot.
To make it easier with bindings in my i3 config I use the set command for things like terminal.

for example

Code: Select all

set $term --no-startup-id urxvt
#set $term --no-startup-id termite
and I change the binding to

Code: Select all

bindsym $mod+Return exec $term;focus
Why I do this is because when using i3 I have alot more on keybindings to terminal applications, so if I switch terminal I dont have to go through all my keybindings and change from urxvt to termite. I can just change one setting and it will work.
My keybinding would look like this:

Code: Select all

bindsym $mod+e exec $term -e neomutt
bindsym $mod+r exec $term -e ranger
bindsym $mod+Shift+r exec $term -e sudo ranger /
bindsym $mod+y exec $term -e calcurse
Perhaps not news to everyone, but since the goal is to learn I just wanted to share a smart way to set up keybindings if you use it :)
