[SOLVED] NUM lock problem

Post by Nvvb7 » Sat May 19, 2018 6:13 pm

I recently installed Arco on one of my Dell laptops. After updates I rebooted, and then I had to log in with password (and in the settings, I set it to login automatically). I know the correct password and type it in, sometimes it says its incorrect, sometimes it tries to load and gets back to the login. I cannot see what I am writing (there is no option to see it), but it seems like the NUM lock light turns on after I press Enter..trying to turn it off again fast does not help. And now I cannot get into the computer again at all...oh dear..any suggestions?

Cheers Nvvb7

Not being able to login.

Per chance you have a nvidia card.

Thankyou for prompt reply :)

I was able to get in with openbox, as suggested in the link. I do have Nvidia, so I followed the intructions to downgrade xorg (did not get options for removing drivers) and also removed the xf86-video-nouveau. When restarting I get:

Failed to start Light Display Manager

Failed to start Samba NMB Daemon

When you get the message of failed....

then press (if you are not in virtualbox)
CTRL + ALT + F2 or F3 or F4
You go to the TTY.

Undo downgrade.

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/pacman.conf
Look for line 25 (or nearby) - put hashtag or # in front of IgnorePkg
Save with CTRL + X

Then update

Code: Select all

sudo pacman -Syyu
Making sure you have xorg installed

Code: Select all

sudo pacman -S xorg-server xorg-server-common
type

Code: Select all

sudo reboot

There was already a hashtag in front of IgnorePkg, so it was suppose to be two of them? After update, install of xorg + reboot, there is not difference in the failed messages.

Are you in for a clean install?

I just made an iso for people like you. This should solve the issue of not being able to login in xfce.

https://arcolinux.com/byoi-on-arcolinux ... nges-made/

It is not difficult. All is explained in the article.

You just need to run script 30.

You will get an iso. Burn it on a usb and clean install.

Ok, thankyou for suggestion. Will make a clean install and see what I can do from there. I guess this is a good option for those a little bit more capable with this than me :)

Linux is often learning for people.
It still is for me after all these years.

I put everything I need in the cloud so I can do a reinstall at any time.
