[SOLVED] Mirror Displays is My Only Option

I've searched through the forums and didn't find anything else about this. I using a laptop and a second monitor. I can't get the desktop to span the 2 displays. When I go into Display settings, I can untick "Mirror Displays" and both displays will show and I can ever rearrange the displays. I then select "Apply" but nothing changes even though it shows 2 displays and the "mirror displays" is not checked. If I exit the display setting and go back in, then the "mirror displays" is ticked again.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled 3 or 4 time to be sure that it wasn't an installation issue. Has anyone seen this issue. Following is my configuration info:

Still missing some info

After checking there is no such issue posted on the forum you create a new post in the correct forum. Give us the following elements at least.
- what iso are you using - type' iso' in the terminal and copy paste that in the post between tags in the forum post
- type 'inxi -b' in a terminal and copy/paste the code between tags in the forum post
- type 'probe' in a terminal and provide us the link
- what graphical drivers have you installed
- on what desktop does the error occur
- is that system up to date - go to TTY (CTRL + ALT + F2 or in VIrtualbox RIght CTRL + F2) and type 'update' and reboot first
- why do you think you have an issue - previous actions can explain the current issue

This is the Xmonad version of ArchLinux. After signing in, as soon as it get to the desktop, I press Alt-F3 for the menu, go to Settings and then Display
When I hit Ctrl-Alt-F2 and type Update, I get the response "There is nothing to do"
I'm assuming that I should be able to span the 2 displays. Maybe that's where my assumptions are incorrect

What settings is this?

it is xrandr and arandr that does your job for you in tiling window managers

some of the icons in xfce settings will work others not

That was the hint that I needed. You mentioned xrandr and arandr. I jumped in and did some quick reading and decided to install ARandR. That did the trick. I was able to select the two monitors, position them as needed, and click apply. Just that simple.
