[CLOSED] Failed to start updates the Arch Linux mirrors

Post by 1needhelp » Wed May 13, 2020 1:10 pm

Hi guys been using Arcolinux B xfce for over a year now with only occasional slight issues which I've managed to fix with the help of Eric's videos. However I am still definitely a newbie and a bit clueless and this new problem has me stumped.

Everything was fine when I shut down the system yesterday but on trying to boot this morning I get the following message, "Failed to start updates the Arch Linux mirrors".

I had a quick search on the net and managed to get into tty6(?) with ctrl alt f3. Not really knowing what I'm doing I tried sudo pacman -Sy but then I get "sudo: /usr/bin/sudo must be owned by uid 0 and have the setupid bit set". I can't move forward from here.

So what went wrong, is my system bricked and am I looking at a fresh install?

Really hope someone can help, I've been loving Arcolinux otherwise.

Regards,

Nigel

From my research it looks like something has changed your permissions. I found this:

Best of luck!

Thanks for that. I'm currently running on s live USB and copying my home folder onto a spare pen drive - just in case I'm looking at a fresh install.

I didn't do anything out of the ordinary yesterday when the system was last running so it's a real mystery as to what's caused this.

I'll be sure to let everyone know if I get any further with this 👍

Hi guys, well I ended up doing a fresh install as I needed my system up and running ASAP.

Would still be nice i someone could give an opinion as to what might have happened to the old install, maybe something I did? Hope it doesn't happen again! :?

Thanks Eric, I really don't remember doing anything 'dodgy', no playing with system files or messing with permissions. Also all updates are applied daily. Sounds like it's almost certainly something went wrong my end though.

I must admit that for a short while I was tempted to return to Manjaro, I already have the latest ISO on a USB drive (for a relative's PC) and did briefly run it in order to recover my home folder and download ArcoLinux B again. I wanted to like it again but that 'Manjaro flavour' just runs too deep for me so I'm happily back with Arco :D .

I'll mark this thread closed but will revisit if I have any more related issues.

Thanks again to those who offered their thoughts.

Nigel

Hello,
I'm getting exactly the same notification on two different machines, one desk top and one laptop, desktop running ArcoB & laptop running Arco.com at either shutdown or reboot, sometimes the hang is very short & quick, blink and you could miss it, other times it can take 15 - 30 seconds before anything happens. It's only just started on the laptop after updating from 20.04 to 20.05 before this it didn't happen at all. It started awhile back on the desktop as that is kept up to date more regularly. I've searched around for an answer but can't find one anywhere, also tried Update Arch Linux Mirrors from the Welcome App, both just after startup & just prior to shutdown neither made any difference. So if anyone has any information on a fix I be glad to hear it, especially as everything else appears to be working fine so not really a big problem just an annoyance I'd like to fix.
Thanks

Apologies but after attempting to upload picture (at which I have failed miserably) I shall write out exactly what I saw on screen which is :-
[FAILED] Failed to start updates the Arch Linux mirrors.
That was it desktop hung for over 30 seconds, then shutdown. If you could explain where I should go to get logs or the code you talk of I will do my best to upload those but after the attempt at the picture I'm not promising anything
Many thanks for trying to help
