[PENDING] Calamares fails to create partitions when choosing to encrypt.

Post by BloodWolf » Sat Jun 08, 2019 11:28 am

Hi there. Having decided to test out the new 19.06 ArcolinuxB-Qtile iso I have noticed that whenever the option to encrypt is selected the installer fails with the following error stating that it has failed to create partitions on the disk. The first image is on a BIOS virtual machine and the second is on a UEFI virtual machine.

BIOS
Image

UEFI
Image

I downloaded the iso from the datacenter using wget

Code: Select all

wget https://bike.seedhost.eu/arcolinux/iso/arcolinuxb-qtile-v19.06.1.iso
and built the iso locally from the github scripts

Code: Select all

git clone https://github.com/arcolinuxb/arco-qtile
neither iso worked using any configuration available to me in the calamares installer.

If anyone has any suggestions explanations then please let us know.
Thanks folks.

I am afraid BloodWolf we need more info.

The calamares team needs to get more technical info.

It is often the combination of settings that will result in a fail.
I would take images from your partition setup in particular and all other relevant screens that may trigger it.

Just installed ArcoLinuxB Qtile full 19.06.1 and ArcoLinux 19.06.1 with encryption and it installed fine.
Curious to see what combo of settings you use.

on BIOS I chose to encrypt, use swap with hibernation and install bootloader to the MBR. Failed.
then changed to install bootloader to system partition. Failed.
tried both again but used swap without hibernation. Failed.

on UEFI i repeated the same steps but without choosing a bootloader location because that isn't an option. Failed.

All of this with done with the "Erase Disk" option as they were either in virtual machines or on hardware with a blank disk.

EDIT
Installation completes when choosing the no swap option, from reading the calamares -d output log it seems that there is a problem with the module that handles choosing swap space.

While this is irrelevant in my personal circumstances for my workstation, my laptop needs swap space because it is old and...crap.

I tried this again without encryption and it failed when chosing swap space so that does seem to be the cause of the failure to install.

It seems to have been reporting already...

https://github.com/calamares/calamares/issues/1163

What do you think?

Or we add this post to that issue or we make a new issue on github.

It seems the upgrade of kpmcore from 3 to 4 causes issues and code needs to be rewritten

I'd make a post commenting on it if you feel there is anything missing from the post but I think the calamares team is aware and it'll be sorted when the team have time.

I personally don't use or need full disk encryption as I dislike the performance hit and it makes recovery operations much more difficult. My work data is just stored in encrypted containers.

Ran into this issue installing Arco Linux 19.07 full edition with i3 on a newer HP laptop.

1. Tried installing Arco linux i3 over Manjaro i3 by wiping the Manjaro ext4 and swap partitions inside Calamares and having Arco reformat them the same size/format. LUKS encryption for a single / /home /everything partition and a 32gb swap partition. Clicked next and after a few beats the above mentioned "failed to create" partition message popped up on screen. Install fail.

2. Restarted Calamares and when I got to the partition screen I left the swap partition unformatted (figuring I could format/enable swap once Arco's installed) and pointed Arco at the main root partition to format and install Arco there without setting up a swap partition. However, the swap partition was still dangling, unformatted, at the end of the HD. Clicked next from the drive partition screen and....."failed to create partition". This was using LUKS encryption for / and no swap setup (but the swap partition was still there at the end of the drive, unformatted).

3. I next decided to forego swap and assigned all of the remaining space on that drive to Arco's / partition. That is, I deleted the unknown swap partition and the aborted Arco partition from 2 above, creating one continuous partition for Arco that ran to the end of the physical drive. SUCCESS. Clicked next on the partition screen and Arco successfully formatted a LUKS partition, but without swap.

4. Ran into the NVIDIA issue on reboot and decided to give it another go installing Arco and this time with LUKS and a proper SWAP partition. Only this time I put SWAP before the / Arco partition and gave Arco all the remaining space on that physical drive. SUCCESS. Clicked next from the partition screen and Arco formatted the main LUKS / ext4 partition and the SWAP partition--which SWAP partition is now before the Arco /root partition on the physical drive.

tl;dr: try placing your main Arco encrypted LUKS "/" partition at the end of the physical drive. If you want a SWAP or other non-LUKS partitions, place them before the LUKS partition in terms of order on the physical drive.

Interesting test.

Putting swap before ext4 / seems to work then.

We have a lot of articles about calamares and one which contains all our testing.

check it out

https://arcolinux.com/category/arcolinu ... calamares/

Some of the configurations work with luks and others not.

we report issues on the calamares github so that it can become more flexible.

Would be great if you report issues to them so we will all get a better calamares over time.
