[SOLVED] AUR helpers and manual build process

Post by gregg0 » Thu Nov 22, 2018 1:43 am

While building Arch Linux ( inside VirtualBox ) I have hit a problem:

During step 12 [ https://arcolinuxd.com/12-installation- ... x-phase-4/ ] , immediately after

Code: Select all

sudo pacman -S i3status
I can not install i3-gaps-next with

Code: Select all

yaourt i3-gaps-next
The shell says

Code: Select all

-bash: yaourt: command not found
The video "Get your AUR helpers in on any Arch Linux based system" is helpful, but it presumes that the user is in a desktop already. I'm still in the tty shell, without any AUR helpers ( I've searched in /usr/bin for all the ones listed on the AUR helpers page at ArchLinux ) and can not sudo pacman -S any either.

So, [ tl;dr ] does anyone have any good advice for manually building i3-next-gaps?

I'm going to hack away at it in the meanwhile, I've taken a snapshot of my VM, so what's the worse that can happen? I might actually learn something.

tnx

g0

In this article during clean install phase 2 we explain what happened with yaourt.

https://arcolinuxd.com/6-the-actual-ins ... x-phase-2/

In there is a link to install yay or trizen.

I will write an add-on to this article....
what if you are NOT on a desktop like xfce, mate, cinnamon etc...

Thinking about it again I see two options

1. install i3-wm or i3-gaps so you have an desktop
2. download the PKGBUILD from AUR of any AUR helper you like and build it

I read in the other post you were able to install i3.

Closing this one... like to know what you did and other future readers as well.

Is this based on Arch Linux or ArcoLinuxD???

I just see that it is not in the correct forum at all.

Your video, Get your AUR helpers in on any Arch Linux based system, is very helpful. Thank you.

But I wasn't able to use that method during my recent build of Arch Linux because I had not yet installed the desktop environment (i3-next-gaps in this case) and there were no AUR helpers in my tty environment.

I think it would be helpful for anyone in a similar situation if you included something in your post, (step)12: Installation of i3 on Arch Linux, Phase 4, about what to do in case there is no AUR helper, and no desktop during the build process.

What worked for me was to follow the various basic instructions from the Installing packages section of the Arch wiki. Note to self: clone git repos into the user account and not the root account.
