[OPEN] I have a black screen when I boot up ArcoLinuxD v18.11.2

Post by 8bit » Fri Dec 07, 2018 3:57 am

I'm trying out various desktop environments with ALD and for some reason, after installing the scripts and following the instructions on the ArcoLinuxD.com page for Bspwm, immediately after a reboot, I get a black screen. Any ideas as to how I can troubleshoot this?

Edit: I've installed ALD within VirtualBox.

Thanks!

You have not installed the ArcoLinux-Wallpapers?
Login uses one of them.

I'm sorry Erik,

My post was not descriptive enough. I don't have a login screen, a desktop or anything. No mouse cursor either.

This is my second go at it for Bspwm with the same results.

Update:

I've successfully installed both Plasma and Awesome DE's using your guides without fail. Something must be amiss with Bspwm.

Enjoying the process nonetheless. Thanks!

Happy to report that everything works.

I did a quick and crude installation of the packages and ...
Login ok
Desktop ok
Mouse ok...

Just wait till the 18.12.7 is out so you can try it on that iso.
Works without fail.
We have several betatesters who love installing bspwm on ArcoLinuxD.
They would have reported something by now.

Perfect! Thank you Erik!

Your guides, support and eye for aesthetically created DE's are what draw me to this distro. Keep up the good work!

I just had another idea.

You should redownload those scripts as we changed them the last weeks.

If you did a git clone, you can do a git pull to get the changes in.

That may explain what you get.

Hi there @ericdubois ...

I want to chip in on the bspwm installation issues...

It is a known fact that just installing the packages for bspwm & sxhkd is not enough.
If people are trying to install them from scratch by just installing the arch packages they will boot into a black screen. The reason for this is that the packages don't install the necessarry config files into user's .config directory
2nd issue is that the sxhkd daemon itself is not so straightforward to figure out - archwiki has obsolete information that will not work and even the few things I was able to find online for sxhkd.service file are not helpful.

So in the interest of wider community I would really appreciate if you could spill the beans in which of your ArcoLinuxD scripts and packages are the special config files so we can analyze them and see how you manage to make the sxhkd work.

I know I can just install the scripts one by one, but I want to learn the internals. From looking into ArcoLinuxB bspwm install I guess you are not using the sxhkd.service at all and u are starting it via a bash script. I am trying (so far unsuccessfully) to make the sxhkd work in as simple way as possible at first ('sxhkd &' in bspwmrc file) before moving on to themeing and such. So even some basic information for a bare minimum requirement to make it work would be appreciated. I managed to get bspwm and tint2 bar to show up and work properly, only sxhkd is giving me a headache...

Install our ArcoLInux version in a virtual machine or second computer and compare what we use.

The packages are straight forward.

just type

sudo pacman -S arcolinux-

and then press twice tab

you get a list of all our packages/knowledge/configurations

There is
arcolinux-bswpm-git

that contains all your settings.

They are installed in /etc/skel and we copy/paste them over to your home directory.

it is so easy to analyze what makes a desktop tick.

Check this link

https://github.com/arcolinuxb/arco-bspw ... ges.x86_64

at the bottom are the packages that will install your desktop and if you scroll up, you will see what arcolinux packages we will use.

You can also use the arcolinuxd github

https://github.com/arcolinuxd

to analyze what packages we use and what packages actually matter.

Happy investigating.
