[SOLVED] WiFi & Sound Problems on Macbook Pro 7,1

Post by damclub-hooligan » Sun Jun 02, 2019 12:54 pm

Good morning everyone!

I have two quite peculiar problems after installing ArcoLinuxB-mate-min v19.03..3 running on Kernel 5.1.5-arch1-2-ARCH and I really hope someone can help me resolve these problems as this computer is going to be a gift for someone.

First of all the hardware used is a Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 13" Mid-2010
https://everymac.com/systems/apple/macb ... specs.html

My first problem is that WIFI networks are not being recongnised. When I click on the network logo I get the following options:

ETHERNET NETWORK
- Wired connection 1
- Disconnect

WIFI NETWORKS
disconnected
- connect to hidden WIFI Network
- create new WIFI Network

VPN Connection

I have read up on the subject matter and in some Arch Forums it mentions to install b43-fwcutter through AUR. I have done this and that (temporarily) resolved the issue showing WIFI networks, but the same issue reappears after restarting the computer.

The second problem is a little difficult to describe. When playing any kind of sound (i,e, music or watching YouTube( it sounds like the sound is being sent through a long metal tube first (do not know how else to describe it, maybe a radio from the 1920s or 1930s). I have reinstalled the ALSA and PULSE/Audio but the problems persist. These sound issues do not appear when running Linux Mint for some reason (?)

As mentioned I really hope someone can help as I want to give this MacBook to someone as a gift.

Google gives me this

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ma ... ,1#Network

They suggest me broadcom and not b43-fwcutter

Nothing about sound on that page

https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/macb ... rtion-help

He just got bad speakers.... end of life-time.

See if another distro has bad sound now too.

Ok. Here's a litle update. I already had the BROADCOM-WL driver installed. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled and
that solved the problem. Hallelujah!

This problem was bugging me ever since I installed Linux for the first time on this machine and with almost all
distributions I was facing the same problem. And in the end the solution was so simple.

As for the soundcard problem - I have given up. I tried the tips that Eric gave me (resetting the NVRAM or PRAM)
but I did not help - the problem still persists So my solution now is to give away an old Bluetooth speaker along
with the MacBook.

Thank you very much for all the help.
