[SOLVED] Permissions denied on pretty much everything after update

Post by Zenzio » Thu Oct 31, 2019 2:37 pm

Hey everybody!

Sorry for the dumb title, I'm not an advanced user. I'm on the normal Arcolinux.iso (not B or D) and I spent my time in i3wm.
After updating my system today a lot of programs are reporting issues because they (or rather me as the user?) suddenly don't have the privileges for the needed access. The update before that one was yesterday, so it's not a big jump. All the messages seem to be something along the lines of '...permission denied...'. I can't even perform actions in Thunar without running the folder as root. I also don't have sound and cannot access pulseaudio since it also fails to access some file.
Today's update only got two things from the Arcolinux repositories (I performed skel) and two packages from the Arch repositories. Sadly I did not pay enough attention to remember which ones, though I don't think they were from the core repository. After a boot into Windows and later on coming back to Arcolinux I ended up with these issues.

I'll perform another update later today and see whether that changes anything. Other than that, does anybody have any suggestions and can point me in the right direction? Does anybody experience the same issue? Please let me know if you need further information.

Best Regards!

These remarks are just too general to help you.
All is fine on all my pc's here.

Retracing your steps is all you can do. Permissions are important on Linux.
Did you do anything by accident maybe.

If not solved in the next days - do a clean install.

With the alias rip in the terminal you can show us what you installed last.

That's just it. To my knowledge I didn't do much of note before the issue presented itself:
I watched some of your videos (thanks for those btw!), but the only thing I thing I actually did at the time was the cb copy bash command. I created the folder which you told us about in another video /home/user/.local/bin/, but I didn't do anything with it and already deleted it just in case.
Otherwise I just updated my system as usual, did skel when necessary and copied over my configs using Meld as always (i3, polybar, variety). Sorry, I know things don't break without a reason. I'll post the output of rip below.

One more thought: Is the folder .config supposed to be owned by root and in group root? Since all the errors seem to be about the applications not being permitted to access some files (I'm guessing their config-files) I was wondering wether that is to blame. Though I have no idea how that would have happened even if I'm right about that.

For example: Opening PulseAudio fails with 'Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait...' and then closing it results in the error message:
'Error writing config file %s/home/alek/.config/-
pavucontrol.ini: OK'

Output of rip for the last few days:

.config is indeed from you and not root

you should never become root and then perform skel

stay user all all time

we have a custom action if you right mouse click in thunar

ownership to root
ownership to user

you need the last one - ownership to user - on the folder of .config

in the image i copy/paste my .config and made the copy root owned (that is NOT what you want)

.config needs to be owned by the users NEVER root

Thank you so very much! This was indeed the issue.
Sadly I'm still at a loss as to how I managed to mess this up in the first place.

Concerning your warning never to become root and then perform skel:
Updating the system (upall) requires me to enter the password. Does this not make me root for the moment? So I shouldn't perform skel in that terminal at that point?
I'm sure this is just a misunderstanding on my part. But as I've said, otherwise I don't know when and how I managed to become root to mess this up and give .config root ownership.

Thanks again for your help. Arcolinux and your videos are simply great!

Glad it is solved.

Linux is learing. So be prepared when everything fails.

Always backup to the cloud or harddisk at all time.

Use chmod or chown -R if you have permission issue.

here are some tuto: https://linuxize.com/post/linux-chown-command/
