[SOLVED] Manual Partition Windows 10 & Arcolinux With Grub

Post by yasgur99 »

Here is my current situation:

I have windows installed on /dev/sdb
I want to install linux on /dev/sda (currently empty)
I want to have NTFS for windows on /dev/sdc (already created) and /home exist on /dev/sdc as well

Since Windows is already installed, I was going to use the install alongside but realized I cannot get the customization I require. I considered choosing "install alongside" and then once its installed changing things after, but there isnt enough room for me to install a full arco install on /dev/sdb (windows is using 90% of the drive already so i cant resize it to be large enough to fit the arco install)

So then I chose "Manual Partition" as I realized this is the only way I'm going to be able to accomplish what I want.
I initially put /boot, and / on /dev/sda but it said i dont have an efi parition. Then it made me think, if I install the efi partition on /dev/sda, will grub be able to pick up the windows boot loader?

Currently /dev/sdb has a NTFS partion (i believe for recovery), then a 100MB FAT32 (i assume for boot), 16MB unknown (idk what this is), and the system NTFS as the rest.

I watched a video from here https://arcolinux.com/how-to-dual-boot- ... tomizACer/ on how to dual boot. at 14:23 it shows in the summary that its installing the boot loader. When I look at the summary for how I was doing it as explained above, there is no mention of install boot loader, and im not sure how to set that up

I leave this to the dual booters.

Personally no frustration with just one OS per ssd.

The general rule is first install Windows then install linux alongside on one ssd.

You seem to have two. It gets all very complicated and it is just not worth it.

So as a non specialist of rearranging boots and efi partitions...

I let the specialists on Windows partitions answer this one.

Select Windows 100MB FAT32 partition and mount to /boot/efi make sure to tick "keep" and not "format", then create the rest of the partitions.

Have actually done this on 2 laptops with Windows 10 installed. An Acer and a HP. Just follow Eriks directions on arcolinux.com and you cannot go wrong!!! If you get an error backtrack and start again.

Good luck mate!!
