[OPEN] ArcoLinux-B Calamares crashes w/core dump

Post by dougbrunelle »

Greetings to Erik and the ArcoLinux group,

I have an old laptop on which I've run the installation of ArcoLinux-B (with "awesome" window manager) a few times, but I get the same problem every time- Calamares hangs up before the first user input window and won't proceed.

The laptop is a 2003 emachines M6809, with an AMD Athlon-64 CPU at 2.0 GHz, 1.25G RAM, and an 80 GB hard disk. It has the ATi "Mobility" Radeon 9600 GPU.

The machine won't boot from USB, so I'm using a DVD-RW with the ArcoLinux-B installation on it. I get the greeter window, with the GParted button and the Calamares button. I click on the Calamares button, and the DVD runs for a moment or two, then stops. There is no further activity; no disk activity, and no activity from the DVD drive.

[Edit - I thought of this after I posted my message. I tried the installation DVD on a newer laptop, and Calamares works fine on that, so the problem doesn't seem to be with the DVD]

To try to troubleshoot, I went to another workspace and called up a terminal. I ran Calamares with -d -D 8 -X options. The program runs and outputs some lines, ending with a core dump message. I have saved the output of the Calamares run to a file, if that will help troubleshooting. I'll paste it in here:

I see that the captured output does not include the core dump message I saw on the screen. Maybe I can take a photo of it with my phone if you need it. Please let me know if you need more information than this to troubleshoot my problem, and if there is already a solution for this problem, I'll give it a try.

Regards,
Doug

An image would be nice

See also on calamares github if someone else reported this issue for your hardware

I uploaded a screenshot of the output of calamares at the point it hangs up, to google photos. It's about the same thing as the text I posted..
