[OPEN] Problem with Intel 3165 wireless network controller

Post by burkaygenc » Mon Oct 21, 2019 7:51 pm

I have recently installed ArcoLinux XFCE bare on a Fivetech Flex laptop. That is a rebranding of the Geo Flex, which itself is a cheap 2in1 convertible. The laptop has an embedded Intel 3165 Wifi module.

Code: Select all

01:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 3165 (rev 79)
I am using the latest kernel: 5.3.7-arch1-1-ARCH

My problem is, although the chip is visible in lspci output, it is not detected by the system in any way. Other people had problems with this chipset but I couldn"t really find a working solution. As far as I know, this chipset is driven by iwlwifi, which is loaded on the system.

Code: Select all

[bgenc@fivetech-burkay ~]$ lsmod |grep iwlwifi
iwlwifi 393216 0
cfg80211 856064 4 wl,rt2x00lib,iwlwifi,mac80211
inxi can also show the chipset, but reports that no driver is loaded.

Code: Select all

Network: Device-1: Intel Wireless 3165 driver: N/A
Device-2: Ralink RT5370 Wireless Adapter type: USB driver: rt2800usb
IF: wlp0s21f0u4 state: up mac: 00:0f:54:15:d1:e3
i found a firmware package related to this chipset and installed it but that didn"t help.

Code: Select all

1 aur/iwlwifi-7265-ucode 25.30.14.0-1 (+0 0.00%) (Installed)
    Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165, Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265, Intel® Dual Band Wireless-N 7265, Intel® Wireless-N 7265 firmware
Intel says this chip is the same as 7265 or 7265D. I am not sure which is what.
I have the following firmware on my laptop:

Code: Select all

/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265-10.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265-12.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265-13.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265-16.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265-17.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265-8.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265-9.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265D-10.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265D-12.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265D-13.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265D-16.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265D-17.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265D-21.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265D-22.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265D-27.ucode
/usr/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265D-29.ucode
Some people say renaming these to 3165 will help. I tried a few to no success. Didn"t try all.
dmesg is pointing to some problems that are beyond my level of understanding.

Code: Select all

[ 5.023176] iwlwifi 0000:01:00.0: Refused to change power state, currently in D3
[ 5.034817] iwlwifi 0000:01:00.0: HW_REV=0xFFFFFFFF, PCI issues?
[ 5.048774] iwlwifi: probe of 0000:01:00.0 failed with error -5
Also this device is the only one on PCIe bus 01. Everything else is on 00.

Code: Select all

So at this point I am hoping that there is somebody here who can understand what all this means.
Intel claims this chip is supported by linux kernels above 4.2+. kernel.org also says the chip is supported
https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/use ... rs/iwlwifi

So it looks like it should just work. Any help?

Just a thought have you ever tried it with the LTS linux kernel.
In my case it makes it worse on mac laptop.
Hopefully it fixes your problem.

How do I change the kernel to LTS? I installed it but there is no option in grub for it.
The system is still using 5.3 kernel.

Ok I have installed the LTS kernel. Surprisingly now inxi reports iwlwifi as the driver of the chipset. However, I still don't have any wireless options under netowrk manager.
Also my touchpad is all broken now :)

How can I do that?
iwconfig doesn't report an interface:

Code: Select all

[bgenc@fivetech-burkay ~]$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

[bgenc@fivetech-burkay ~]$ inxi -n
Network:
Device-1: Intel Wireless 3165 driver: iwlwifi
